There are two species of ground snakes found in this area. They are small snake, extremely variable in coloration.
GREAT PLAINS GROUND SNAKE
Sonora e. episcopa
This ground snake was found under a rock just north of Langtry in April. It was coming out of the hole seen by the tip of its tail. In this area the ground snakes range from reddish to brown to gray.
TRANS-PECOS GROUND SNAKE
Sonora semiannulata blanchardi
The banded ground snakes are found in the Big Bend region in Brewster and Presidio counties. The variation of color does not seem to be as great as it is in the other ground snakes, but I have found some south of Alpine that were orange and black, looking somewhat like miniature juvenile ringed pythons.
This specimen is from Presidio County on the River Road near Redford.
