Lajitas is located on Highway 170 in southwestern Brewster County. The population is about 100. The town was built in the late 70's by Walter Mischer of Houston as a way to improve an area he loved. It has no economic base other than tourism. There are a couple of motels, which are not cheap, and a so-so restaurant as well as a few shops. There is also a 9 hole golf course.
The state of Texas has recently taken over the museum, which is located east of town, and operates it as the Barton Warnock Nature Center. It is an interesting diversion.
The water is taken from the Rio Grande and processed. It is barely potable.
